I feel bad even though this isn’t really my fault

My friend came to me with this very strange situation not so long ago.

He said that his finances were becoming tight ever since the bonus structure was done away with at his workplace. He actually relied on those yearly bonuses to get by, but with the pandemic they were taken away. While he was making less money, he said it was difficult to afford to pay the nanny to clean the house, change the air filters to the HVAC, and take care of the children. It was especially difficult for the nanny because suddenly the kids were at home all the time doing the remote learning. My friend said he ended up selling stuff from the attic online, some of the valuable jewelry and even their old window A/C units and portable heaters. I was shocked when he told me this because I knew his wife had to be mad. That’s what he brought up next, the fact that his wife accused the nanny of stealing her jewelry and portable HVAC systems from the attic. My friend said he was going to replace the jewelry and the HVAC systems when he was able to save up more money, but she found out about the missing stuff from the attic. He was trying to get some advice on what he should do. His wife wanted him to fire the nanny, and he was trying to protect the nanny’s job because she did such a great job with the kids and house cleaning. I told him he had to come clean and tell his wife the truth. He ended up doing just that and now she wants to divorce him. I don’t feel like this is my fault, but I feel bad.
